As I parked my ML on the side of the street in Brooklyn tonight, I started thinking- why is it that in NYC at least, we leave one of our most expensive possessions on the side of the road? It seems a little backwards to me and it makes me wonder about the development of society.

No kidding. There's no way I'd street park a car worth anything for an extended amount of time.

Do you live in a metropolis? I guess my ML isn't "worth" much and it's hard to steal a car these days off the street, but I'd be super pissed if someone smashed my window.

LA more a giant suburb than a metropolis but drivers here are incompetent and inconsiderate regardless. Not to mention thieves and vandals.

Yeah... the dumbo area is relatively safe so I don't feel THAT paranoid, but once in a while you do see smashed windows...

That is backwards. New York is backwards. I've never been and can't say I'm dying to, although I know I need to see our nation's biggest city before I die. I'm a Kentuckian from the village (as you would see it) of Lexington. Here we have suburbs, farms and most importantly garages! I couldn't imagine city life, I'd probably be about half scared most of the time.

(I realize I worded that a little strongly. I don't much care for cities, and have trouble hiding that animosity when talking about them. Not meant as a diss on New York or your lifestyle, just a glimpse of life in a different area from a different perspective.)

I've had a car stolen from an underground parking garage and my current one is a theft magnet. Part of me wants to just get a beater Camry or something, but I like driving, and I like my dumb car too much.

That aside, I just don't get how people street park nice cars daily. I get that in crowded cities there's not much of a choice, but ... damn.

Grew up in suburbs, first of L.A., then of S.F. Did some school in the midwest, back to L.A. suburbs, then Phoenix suburbs where I am today. I've always had at least a 2-car garage, even when living in a condo. I never saw the appeal to NY, and I would diss it, pretty much like you just did, whenever the topic would come up.

Then I went there on business and spent several days in midtown Manhattan. And I did it again. And again. And I loved it. It honestly feels like you are in the Most Important Place in the World. It may be delusional, but oh, the appeal is strong. However, it would require massive lifestyle changes for a person like me to live there, not the least of which would involve somehow tripling my salary.

So I no longer diss NYC, even though there is really no chance of me ever living there. You definitely should visit some time.
